Introduction:
This is a little mini guide to how I play Udyr. Honestly, I kind of wrote this just because I want to see what other people think of how I play Udyr and what people think I should change. If you want to, you can follow this guide too and see how it works out for you. I play Udyr as a tanky DPS or sort of an Offtank, maxing both pheonix and tiger stances. Yes, that's right. You'll see my build below.
Runes:
9x Armor Pen Marks
9x Flat Armor Seals
9x /Lvl Magic Resist Glyphs
3x HP Quintessences
The armor pen marks are for just a bit more damage since Armor Pen will be more useful to your damage output than Magic Pen. The armor seals are for jungling. Per level magic resist glyphs are for tankiness late game as my build will make you quite tanky. Hp quints for easy jungling early game and avoiding level 1 and early ganks in the jungle.
Masteries and Summoner Spells:
For masteries i go 0/21/9. My build focuses on being tanky since Udyr can already do damage without damage items. In the Defense tree I max the armor and magic resist bonuses, get the dodge chance and Nimbleness, get reduced damage from minions, reduced physical damage, Veteran's Scars (increase health), and Tenacity (4% reduced damage taken). Justification for these masteries are that Ardor sucks, strength of spirit isn't needed, and I don't use any of the summoner spells that are in the defense tree, making it pointless to improve them. In the utility tree I get improved ghost, Perserverance (you can get good hands, it's all a matter of preference as I think these low tier masteries are both useless), extra xp and one point in utility mastery. The utility tree is pretty standard for junglers, making sure to get the key extra xp mastery. The reason I do not go and get improved smite is because I believe the one point in utility mastery (longer buff duration) is too good to give up because buffs are really good. Also, the extra 5 gold and 5 reduced cooldown won't affect anything much.
The summoner spells I get are Smite and Ghost.
Smite because you need it to jungle (which all udyrs should do) and ghost because it's a really good ganking and chasing spell, which is good because you're both a ganker and a chaser. Also, it's a good overall spell for pretty much any champion.
Skill Order:
1. Pheonix
2. Turtle
3. Pheonix
4. Bear
5. Pheonix
6. Turtle
7. Pheonix
8. Turtle
9. Pheonix
10. Turtle
11. Turtle
12. Bear
13. Bear
14. Tiger
15. Tiger
16. Tiger
17. Tiger
18. Tiger
So basically, I get pheonix for fast jungling and insane damage output early game. I get one rank in bear at level 4 because that's usually when you'll start ganking and the stun and the bonus movement speed help out alot. After maxing Pheonix I focus on Turtle just because it's so great and it makes you very tanky early-mid game. After that I get two more levels in bear for a bit more extra movement speed and then I switch over to tiger. Usually people running a normal pheonix build will max out bear and then only level tiger until everything else is maxed. Well, I feel like the extra movement speed on bear isn't needed because you already run really fast and tiger stance gives you very good single target DPS for a tanky build. Many Udyrs have an opinion of Pheonix vs. Tiger, and I think they're both good. I feel that Pheonix has better early game damage and tiger has better late game damage with the double tiger combo (For people who don't know what I'm talking about, read Vecuu's In-depth analysis of tiger stance, a great read which helped me understand more about Udyr (However I do believe that some of the mathcrafting that Vecuu did is now inaccurate because of the new patch. The damage tiger stance does now should actually be more than what is shown in the equations). So, pheonix early game, turtle after pheonix, a bit of bear and tiger late game.
Item Build:
Cloth Armor + 5 hp pots
Boots of speed
Madreds Razor > Wriggles Lantern
Mercury Treads
Banshee's Veil/Randuin's Omen
Randuin's Omen/ Banshee's Veil (whichever you didn't get before)
<insert defensive item>
GA
So... this is my item build. The cloth armor and 5 pots are pretty standard for jungling. Boots of speed on your first recall because you'll be ganking soon and the extra movement speed will help. Upgrade the cloth armor to madreds because it'll make jungling easier and faster. Upgrade madreds to wriggles because then jungling gets even easier and you have a free ward every 3 minutes. It's just such an insanely low priced item for all the bonuses it gives IMO. After your wriggles you'll get merc treads because CC and slows counter udyr. All of udyr's attacks are melee and if he cant get to his target then he can't do anything. After merc treads I decide between Banshees and randuins. Randuins for physical teams and banshees for magic teams. If the teams are balanced then I get a negatron cloak and a chain vest first then build into whichever one I feel like. After those two, I buy another defensive item based on what I need more, thornmail for heavy DPS carries, FoN for even more MR. The guardian angel after is just for more tankiness and revive, something that can help a lot in intense late game team fights.
Jungle Paths:
NOTE:
Whichever jungle path you choose, always ask teammates to guard you ESPECIALLY if there's a stealther on the other team. If there's a stealther then ask one of your teammates very sweetly to buy a vision ward. Most likely, they won't buy one. If you're in solo-queue don't even bother. I lose hope that there's even a single good soul out there in the LoL universe.
Also, help out your teammates if they need help. Don't be "too busy jungling." That pisses me off when I'm laning and my jungler doesn't want to help out our solo who's getting harrassed into oblivion. Ultimately, our solo dies, the game snowballs into a loss and the jungler blames the solo. The jungler is not just responsible for ganking and controlling the jungle, he's also responsible for relieving pressure on lanes that need it.
Use smite just at the right time. What I mean by the right time is the time when the amount of health it has will be killed exactly with one smite. This prevents your buffs/dragon/baron from being stolen from you. Good junglers will be able to do this near perfection.
Recently I've tried soloing dragon at level 6 with Udyr with a cloth armor, an hp pot and boots of speed. I was unable to do it with pheonix and turtle due to the dragon buffs. To be safe I would wait until at least level 7 with madreds and smite.
DONT LET ANYONE LEECH YOUR XP. If one of your teammates do, then you should still be alright, but jungling will be a lot rougher.
Jungle Path #1: The riskier but faster one.
So you start at the blue golem, kill it with pheonix and smite, move to the wolves, wraiths then double golems. Do not use an HP pot after wraiths because once you kill duo golems you'll be going home anyway (unless your HP is like under 200 which it shouldnt be) Recall, buy boots 1 ward and as many health pots as you can. Go to lizard and kill it with smite. Proceed to gank lanes and adapt to the situation. This route is the most common one and thus it is the most counterable on and the most expected one from you. If you do this route then you DEFINITELY have to have teammates guard you. If there is a stealther such as eve on the other team I would just abandon this route at the load screen. If there's an eve on the other team that has smite, doing this jungle route would be like saying, "Please come gank me. I'm a noob and I want to get ganked and have my Golem buff be stolen from me." Just don't do it. However, If their team has a jungler and no eve with smite then this route will probably be safe. Their teammates will probably be busy defending their own jungler instead of coming to gank you. Still have your teammates guard you, though.
Jungle Path #2: Not so fast, it's still OK though. You probably won't get ganked.
Ok, so you started the game and they have a smite eve or you just feel insecure. Buy your normal items and head over to wraiths. Smite the big blue one and pheonix down the little red ones. Go to wolves and once you kill the big red wolf you should level up. Get turtle stance and just turtle. After that, go over to double golems and kill them however you want. Use smite. Recall to buy boots and maybe an hp pot if you have money (you should still have 3 hp pots left on top of another hp pot you should be able to buy). Go to golem, kill it with smite (the cooldown should be close to over with smite. If it's not just wait a few seconds before starting the fight). Wipe out the wolves and wraiths on your way to red buff. Go to lizard and kill it. Your HP should be at least above half now and you should be level 5 with double buffs. Congratulations. Go gank the **** out of some people.
Teamfights:
Run in right after your tank initiates with bear stance. Pop randuin's active in the middle of them. Head straight for the carry and stun + double tiger combo (if you still don't know what this is then I would highly suggest you read Vecuu's thread that I hyperlinked above). Use turtle stance if they focus you. But, if you focus you then you're sort of doing your job since you're quite tanky and you're an offtank, giving your big damage dealers some time to rape face. Basically, run into the fight, scare off or kill their carry, tank a bit, chase down survivers with bear stance and possibly ghost if it's not on cooldown.
Conclusion:
I have no conclusion. Just let me know what you think of this guide and don't troll too much. At least make your post funny or something.
