Players have been experience freezes and crashes while updating their beta client.
Running the launcher as a Windows admin is very important. However, some players find that even though they are a Windows admin, they must create a new password protected Windows admin account to get the launcher to download updates.
- Open the Start Menu
- Open Control Panel
- Open User Accounts
- Select "Create a new account"
- Enter a name for the account, hit next, and set the account to computer administrator
- Select the account you just created
- Select "Create a password" and follow the instructions in Windows to set a password for the account
- Locate lol.launcher.exe (the default shortcut leads to this program)
- Right click lol.launcher.exe and select "Run as..."
- Select "The following user:" and enter the account you created
Other common solutions:
1) Wait for the launcher to run for 5 to 10 minutes before force quitting or ending the task. The launcher will have to restart a few times during the patching process, and this may make it appear as if the launcher has closed when it is really active in the background.
2) Power cycle your modem (unplug it and let it stay unplugged for 30 seconds) and disable any anti-virus or firewalls you have running and run the launcher again. Let the launcher run for as long as you can even if it looks frozen.
3) Make sure Windows Service Pack 3 for XP or Service Pack 2 for Vista is installed.
4) If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, the install path for Riot Games cannot be inside your program files folder. Some players find reinstalling the game to another path fixes the problem.
5) Disable any anti-virus or firewall software that may be prevent the launcher from updating, even if the launcher has worked without any problems in the past. Norton has been a common culprit. Check out the Windows Firewall troubleshooting page, even if you don't think Windows Firewall is enabled.
6) Update Adobe Air directly from Adobe. http://get.adobe.com/air/
7) Clean out temporary internet files in Windows. Some players find cleaning out their registry using a tool like CCleaner also helps.
8) Try turning down the security settings in Internet Explorer and clearing all the temporary files. Make sure IE is not in "Offline" mode, the security settings are set to Medium-High or lower, and IE is accepting all cookies. Some players find setting IE to the default browser also helps, as well as updating to IE 8. IE add-ons may cause problems with the patcher as well, be sure to clear your browsing data and reinstall IE (or uninstall the add ons) if the program has been altered from it's original state.
9) Check to make sure active scripting is enabled. Here's a link to an explanation on how to enable active scripting in Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/howtoscript
10) Reinstalling League of Legends from scratch may also solve this problem. When reinstalling, make sure to completely uninstall and delete any remaining Riot Games and League of Legends folders, then install using the setup file found here:

11) If all else fails, you can try changing to public DNS servers. The updater uses server aliases that have problems connecting to some ISP default DNS servers. This can be avoided by changing you DNS to public servers in network settings. WARNING: Changing these settings can cause problems with previous network configurations. If these changes cause problems with your internet connection be prepared to revert to your old settings; save any information you are about to change.
