I play a handful of champions because I want to maximize my chances of winning, and it just so happens that that is usually achieved by playing Alistar.

If there's already another tank, then cool beans, I get to play Sivir/Annie/Ryze/Trist/Fiddle, but my champion choice is usually locked due to how everybody immediately goes for the first carry they own.

Having different Elos for each champion would be neat, but I'd imagine it would be worse for the community than it is worth. i.e. a 3300 elo Ashe player then switches to Trist, putting him at the base 1200 elo.... he then smashes every person unfortunate enough to get matched up against him.

I already buy new champions with my IP. There isn't much else to spend it on.

I want to try new characters, I really do... Every so often, I pull out a new champion, but after one or two games, I always end up going straight back to Singed... I don't know why, but for some reason he's just so much more fun to me than any other champion I've tried.

I presume once I get enough IP and am able to fill out rune pages for some other champions as well, I'll do so, but for the time being... I'm content playing my one character.

Farming up AND switching out rune pages is too annoying to really get them effective for all different types of characters. I basically have a physical damage page and a magic page. You're locked into two types of characters when selection starts because you cant change runes after that.

Character based ELO is almost out of the question as that would require everyone to pick their heroes before joining the queue.. leaving the matchmaking system the wonderful task of sorting out 10 different Ezraels and putting them on 10 different teams.

ew is so hard farm the ip just for 1 page lvl 2/3, take alot of time / games, and if you finish, works only for 1-2 chars most of the time, so switching chars and trying new things are not always fun / b

I don't trust my rune page to play support/tank characters. I'll start playing them I actually have a proper rune page to back them up.

...that and I'm more confident playing a DPS champ over a support/tank one anyhow. Not my fault the tanks that I want are **** expensive.

I think there should be an ELO variation per champion based upon how much you play and/or win with him. If you reach a certain point by playing champion X, then you switch, but too bad, your opponents will match the level you got with Champion X, but you won't be up to par with your new champion at first.

However, Season 1 draft mode will be in for an unpleasant surprise to many of the "1-champion-wonders" that climb the ELO ladder just by playing the same toon over and over. Especially if there is exclusive pick (1 of the same champion per game, not per team) and bans along with it.

I myself find it boring to always play the same. I was a fan of all random mode in DotA. My wins with my 3 most played characters do not make up even for 50% of my wins.

You don't see that as a benefit? If I sit down and I only want to play for an hour and I want to play Ezreal, then having the option to select that is a benefit. Otherwise, I queue dodge until I get in first and lock in Ezreal, or I play some other character and don't have as much fun.

I contend Elo by character simplifies matchmaking and makes for better games because I'm paired up with others of similar Elo based on the character I'm playing. If I'm tryhard then I'll play my main character and be matched accordingly. If I'm trying out a new char, I'll be matched against others trying new characters (or trying the game in general, given that other limits on mm are still used, such as newbie island, etc.)

Another example comes in balance - Riot can go off and make an uber character and people who play that character will max out on Elo. Then, they can look at the numbers and see that Jax's average Elo is 2500 (no matter who plays him) while Warwicks is 1100. They can then choose what to do - keep it and MM will ensure that games will be fair or nerf/fix the characters.

I know that quite a few others do as I do - Play one character for a while, then move on when you feel like it.
That's not what I'm curious about, as I said. Some people do that. The question is for those that don't do that - why don't you try out different characters?

I guess I could have put in a "I didn't read the question" answer, but I didn't think I had to.

Whenever I try out a new character, I tend to do badly the first few times and just get showered with "learn 2 play nub" and "do some f'ing practices u **** [insert racist word of choice here]".

problem is, practices suck because people dont care about leaving the game/afking, so the only place to get real experience with a character is in normal games. And thus after sucking once or twice with a new char, I just go back to my comfort zone of Singed. Ah... good old Singed.
