Heimerdinger must play extremely cautiously. If you are ever in danger of being assaulted by enemy champions, you should be within range of at least two of your turrets. This is the single most important piece of advice I can give on playing Heimerdinger. Otherwise, your #1 job is to push turrets. You will always lose a 1v3 fight except in special circumstances, so you must be careful about where you go. Otherwise, you provide great support for your team in pushing or defending scenarios. Stick near your turrets, and you’ll be extremely effective.
By far the best item on Heimerdinger is Zhonya’s Ring. Most of Heimerdinger’s damage output is from his turrets, meaning that if you activate Zhonhya’s, you’re still putting out great damage. Similarly, grabbing a fast Deathfire Grasp afterwards allows you amazing burst damage right before or after Zhonya’s Ring ends. Otherwise, standard AP, moderate cooldown, and magic penetration are the optimal stats to get.
